Spring Home Maintenance Tasks-Gutters

The weather is great and it's time for those home maintenance tasks. Some time spent now can avoid headaches in the future.

Gutters and foundation drainage

  • When is the last time you checked your gutters?

  • It's a good idea to check them at least annually but please remember safety first. If your gutters are not easily accessible or you don't feel safe using ladders, consider hiring someone who is comfortable and able to climb and work while standing on a ladder.

  • Check for debris and excessive roof granules that can block or slow down water flow to the downspouts. Remove any material in gutters as needed. Flushing with a garden hose is often adequate.

  • Check that gutters and downspouts are securely attached to the home.

  • Make sure downspouts are discharging water at least 6 ft. away from the home's foundation. The whole purpose of gutters is to get the water away from the foundation to aid in the prevention of water infiltration into the structure.

  • Consider adding splash blocks at the end of downspout discharges to prevent erosion. These act to slow the water down and prevent it from digging a hole at the downspout discharge.

Gutters and downspouts are an important part of your home and need periodic maintenance to perform correctly.

Above all be safe.
